Why I Go on Mission Trips

The first mission trip I went on was 17 years ago! I find mission trips to be very rewarding for many reasons. They allow me to see the world through a different lens and remind me of how good I truly have it. Sometimes we get so caught up in our everyday lives, our routines, and the things we think we need that we forget to appreciate what we already have.

One of the things I enjoy most about mission trips is being able to make other people happy. I love seeing the joy that something as simple as a smile, a conversation, a helping hand, or a small gift can bring to someone else. I like knowing that maybe I can make somebody’s day a little brighter or make someone feel special and cared for.

My faith is also a big part of why I go on mission trips. I believe God calls us to love our neighbors and to serve others, and these trips give me an opportunity to put my faith into action. I don’t go because I think I can change the world, but I can at least change the world for one person at a time. I have seen God working through the people I have met on mission trips and through the people I have traveled with on our mission teams.

Mission trips have taught me that you don’t always have to do something big to make a difference. Sometimes just showing up matters. Listening matters. Spending time with someone matters. Letting another person know that they are seen, valued, and loved can mean more than we realize.

I’ve also learned that I usually come home with much more than I took with me. I may go with the intention of helping someone else, but I always end up learning something, meeting people who touch my heart, and seeing the world a little differently. My faith grows, too, as I see God in the people I meet and in the relationships we build.

That’s why I keep going on mission trips. And now, I’m excited to see what this next mission trip, and the people we meet in Kenya, will teach me.
